On 27 August 2013, Prof. Dr Manfred Hübner passed away at the age of 66 after a short, serious illness. We mourn the loss of a colleague whose academic appointments are inextricably linked to the history of the Oldenburg Institutes of History and Economics Education. Manfred Hübner was born in Goslar/Harz in 1947. After training and studying chemistry at the University of Education in Burgsteinfurt, Manfred Hübner went on to study to become a secondary school teacher at the Hildesheim department of the University of Education in Lower Saxony. As a teacher and subject specialist at the Lower Saxony State Institute for Teacher Training (now NLQ), Manfred Hübner came to the University of Oldenburg in 1981 - initially as a lecturer and later as a seconded teacher for the degree programme in Work/Economics. As an academic counsellor, Manfred Hübner completed his doctorate in 1993 on the subject of "Environmental education in the context of economics education in general education schools". In 1997, he habilitated with the denomination "Didactics of Economics Education". In 2000, Manfred Hübner was appointed Associate Professor of Economics Education at the University of Oldenburg, and from 2005 to 2010 he was spokesperson for the university's Institute for Economics Education. During his decades of work in Oldenburg, Manfred Hübner made a significant contribution to establishing Economics Education in Lower Saxony and beyond. As a university lecturer, he prepared generations of prospective teachers for their academic appointments. At the same time, Manfred Hübner has organised numerous certificate courses and teacher training measures, some of which were very complex. In this context, he has worked in face-to-face and online courses, particularly in Lower Saxony, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Russia/Siberia. Also worth mentioning is his great involvement in extensive school projects "Wirtschaft in die Schule" (WIS!) (1998-2002) and "Economics Education online" (2001-2005), in which he was active as an author of teaching units and online teaching modules as well as a lecturer for the training of online tutors and a speaker in teacher training in several Federal States. In these two projects, he made a significant contribution to ensuring that Economics Education was increasingly understood as a general educational task in schools nationwide. From 2004, he accompanied the spin-off of the An-Institute for Economics Education, which has been based at Bismarckstraße 31 in Oldenburg since 2005, and supported the development work in the following years. He was always a valuable advisor to all colleagues at the Institute, and his professional experience enabled him to support numerous projects in school practice and the qualification of teachers. The spectrum of his teaching and research work was diverse and ranged from environmental education to student company work and career guidance. A particular concern of his was the co-operation between university and school. KGS Rastede, for example, was honoured several times for the student companies he was instrumental in initiating. In the 1990s, Manfred Hübner continued to be intensively involved in the development of co-operation with Russian universities and played a significant role in the successful 20-year co-operation between the University of Oldenburg and Novosibirsk State University. Manfred Hübner was co-editor of the renowned journals for teachers "arbeiten+lernen/Wirtschaft" (now "Unterricht Wirtschaft und Politik") and "Ekonomika", which is published in Russian and German jointly with Novosibirsk State University. As an author, he has written numerous scientific publications and contributed to school textbooks. Not to be forgotten is his participation in several curriculum commissions for the subject of labour/economics/technology and the subject of economics in Lower Saxony. After 30 years at the Institute for Economics Education, Manfred Hübner retired in 2010. He had time for other things - especially sailing and good reading away from academic papers. But even after his retirement, he was actively involved in teacher training and further education as well as in the development of teaching materials. Manfred Hübner was held in high esteem by both colleagues and students. He was always a loyal colleague and a very helpful person who was always happy to be consulted, whether on technical or other matters, and who was always concerned about the welfare of his staff and students. Manfred Hübner leaves a big gap - he will be greatly missed by his colleagues at the two Institutes of Economics Education.
