- Worked as an assistant director (including at the Deutsches Theater Berlin)
- Worked at the GDR State Film Archive
- Obtained his Abitur at an evening college
- Studied at the University of Film and Television, Potsdam-Babelsberg. Graduated as a university-trained director
- Worked for twenty years as a director at the DEFA Studio for Documentary Films
- In 1990, took up a three-year fixed-term contract as an Academic Councillor at the University of Oldenburg, followed by a permanent teaching post in the field of Art/Visual Media
