HCI Researcher, Maker and innovative digital technologies designer
Michael is a technology designer and PhD candidate under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Susanne Boll.
He holds a Bachelor of Technology with Honours: Software Engineering and a Master of Computer Science from the Namibia University of Science and Technology. Additionally, he has extensive academic experience in African and European contexts, combining expertise in Software Engineering, Product Research and Human Computer Interaction.
His past work was in co-designing digital tools for cultural preservation with marginalised communities in Namibia. His PhD topic, titled „Designing User Interfaces Embedded in Everyday Objects for Rich interaction” centres on designing and evaluating tangible user interfaces (TUIs) for smart home control with a particular emphasis on embodied interaction and the repurposing of everyday objects as alternative smart home control user interfaces.
Michael's research explores how the secondary affordances of everyday objects can be exploited to realise new interfaces and possibly improve the user experience in modern day smart homes.
