Master of Education

The Institute of Music offers three degree programmes leading to a Master of Education:

  • Teacher training for special schools, comprising 30 credit points (CP) and a standard period of study of 4 semesters
  • Teacher training for grammar schools, comprising 30 CP and a standard period of study of 4 semesters
  • Teaching at primary, secondary and lower secondary schools, comprising 9 CP and a standard period of study of 4 semesters (GHR300)

The Master of Education builds on the multi-disciplinary Bachelor’s degree programme in Music and concludes it with a qualification for professional practice. In all three variants, the Master of Education is generally supplemented by a second subject and an area of specialisation.

A distinctive feature of the music programme is the continuous one-to-one tuition in a main and secondary instrument or voice. Alongside courses in media and group music practice and music theatre projects, these one-to-one lessons contribute to the distinctive profile of an artistic and academic programme of study, which corresponds to the school music programme at German universities of music. Depending on the standard period of study, the Master’s programme is supplemented by subject-specific teaching methodology and musicology.

From the winter semester 14/15, the innovative new degree programme “GHR300” was introduced for students training to teach at primary, secondary and lower secondary schools.
The programme now lasts four semesters and comprises 300 credit points (previously two semesters). Students benefit from a strong integration of theory and practice, as an 18-week school placement (practical block) is prepared, supervised and reviewed at the university.

Career paths

The Master of Education is a logical continuation of the versatile Bachelor’s degree with a view to a career as a music teacher. The aim of the degree programme is to equip students with the ability to teach the subject of music to a high standard in general education schools, following the completion of an additional teaching placement. In practical terms, this means the ability to design, deliver and justify subject-specific, well-founded and creative lessons that build on pupils’ interests and the diversity of contemporary musical life.
