More practical experience in science degrees: a new lecture theatre block featuring a modern experimental lecture theatre is now available to students on the Wechloy campus. Just in time for the start of the winter semester, the two-storey building, covering around 1,100 square metres, offers particularly good learning conditions.
“The practical component in the natural sciences, which has always been significant, has become even more important following the transition to the Bachelor’s/Master’s system, making the need for a second large experimental lecture theatre increasingly urgent,” said University President Prof. Dr Dr Hans Michael Piper during a tour of the new premises. Prof. Dr Gunilla Budde, Vice-President for Studies and Teaching, added, highlighting the building’s versatility: “During lectures in the experimental lecture theatre, students can follow scientific experiments first-hand. In the course room, they can then carry out microscopy or dissection work.”
The rooms will be used primarily by students of biology, chemistry, landscape ecology, marine environmental sciences and medicine. The experimental lecture theatre, equipped with state-of-the-art media technology, seats 190 people. Preparation rooms are directly connected to the lecture theatre. There is also a course room for practical work, as well as two seminar rooms and group work rooms.
Thanks to its compact design, the building is particularly energy-efficient. Sustainability was a key priority during construction; the bricks used were sourced from the region. The total cost of the new building amounts to approximately 5.5 million euros. The construction project was planned and carried out by the Weser-Ems State Building Management Authority.
