Science communication in Oldenburg city centre, with and for the people of the city and the region: this is what The Smart House Oldenburg will offer in future, whether through talks, conferences or exhibitions.
On 28 September, the joint venture between the University and Jade University of Applied Sciences will open on Schlossplatz: featuring an entertaining stage programme for young and old, guided tours of the building, a ‘Schlaue Meile’ and short talks by Oldenburg-based academics.
Welcoming addresses will be given by University President Prof. Dr Babette Simon, the President of Jade University of Applied Sciences, Dr habil Elmar Schreiber, the State Secretary at the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture, Dr Josef Lange, and Lord Mayor Prof. Dr Gerd Schwandner. In the ‘Smart Mile’, research groups and institutions will be presenting their work. For example, the university’s ‘Thin-Film Photovoltaics’ research group will explain what the ‘secret of the solar cell’ is all about; Jade University of Applied Sciences will showcase research and development robots in the field of assistive technologies; the OFFIS Institute explores ‘Computing Science in everyday life’ through an experiment, and the ‘Forscherbambini’ association organises hands-on experiments for children from nursery age onwards.
In eleven short talks on the topics of energy and climate, scientists will explain, amongst other things, ‘Research into the energy of tomorrow’, ‘Wind energy and turbulence’ and ‘The consequences of climate change for the energy sector’. The full programme for the opening ceremony, together with the events planned by the Schlaues Haus for the coming months, is available at the Schlaues Haus and online.
‘Climate and Energy’ and ‘Housing and Living’ are the key themes of the Schlaues Haus, which aims to promote dialogue between the scientific community and the public. The Smart House Oldenburg gGmbH is supported by the University of Oldenburg and Jade University of Applied Sciences. The centre was made possible thanks to the support of the State of Lower Saxony and the regional business community: EWE, Bremer Landesbank, Landessparkasse zu Oldenburg, Öffentliche Versicherung Oldenburg and Oldenburgische Landesbank.
A smart mile to the start
