The Leo Trepp-Lehrhaus and the University of Oldenburg are continuing their joint lecture series with the lecture "Nathan Marcus Adler (1803 - 1890) Jewish Education and Educational Concepts".
The speaker is the Oldenburg rabbi Jona Simon. He will talk about Nathan Marcus Adler, who was appointed rabbi in the Duchy of Oldenburg in 1828 and took over the rabbinate of Hanover from his father Markus Adler in 1829. He was responsible for the reorganisation of the Jewish communities and the reform of the Jewish school system. In 1845, he was elected "Chief Rabbi" of the British Empire and moved his centre of life to London.
Jona Simon was born in Bielefeld in 1978 and grew up in Gran Canaria and Westphalia. Before taking up his rabbinical studies at the Abraham Geiger College in Potsdam in 2005, he studied Jewish Studies and Romance Studies at Bielefeld University and Seville (Spain). Simon received his Smicha in 2011 and has been working as a rabbi for the State Association of Jewish Communities in Lower Saxony since 2012. He lives with his family in Oldenburg.
To mark the 20th anniversary of the re-establishment of the Jewish community in Oldenburg in 1992, the lecture series is being organised under the annual theme "Rabbis in Oldenburg in the context of religion, politics and society". The event is organised by the Jewish Community of Oldenburg, the Jewish Studies Office at the University of Oldenburg, the Protestant Church District of Oldenburg, the Dean's Office of the Catholic Church in Oldenburg, the Forum St. Peter and the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation.
Admission to the event is free. Donations are requested.
