Violeta Dinescu's compositions for flute are intended to transport the listener to a magical garden of sounds. "Forgetmenot" (Forget-me-not) is the title of the new CD by the composer and university teacher. The Romanian flautist Ion Bogdan Stefanescu interprets the works.
Dinescu sends her listeners on a journey of sonic discovery with her works, subverting conventional expectations in the process: Her pieces are characterised by rare and unusual sounds and an expressive tonal language. Various flutes are used: from the piccolo and alto flute to the Chinese dizi flute and the kazoo, a membranophone. While Dinescu wrote fine figurations for the dizi, based on traditional Far Eastern music, she has given the part for the kazoo a coarse, folk-like character. This demonstrates Dinescu's spiritual closeness to the traditional folk music of her native Romania.
Dinescu studied composition, piano and education in Bucharest. She moved to Germany in 1982 and has been teaching and composing at the University of Oldenburg since 1996. Since then, she has organised the composer colloquium series "Music of Our Time" and founded the archive for Eastern European music at the Carl von Ossietzky University. Dinescu has also organised the annual symposium series "Zwischen Zeiten" since 2006. Her extensive musical oeuvre ranges from instrumental music, choral literature, film music and ballet compositions to operas.
