New UGO event format

The Universitätsgesellschaft Oldenburg e.V. (UGO), which is one of the largest of its kind in Germany with over 1,000 members, is once again offering an extensive and varied programme for all those interested in science and culture this year.

This includes lecture events, tours and concerts as well as ambassador receptions in the region. "It is our mission to strengthen the bridge between the university and the population and to make it accessible to more and more people. The university is of crucial importance for the development of the city and region as a research and teaching institution," explained UGO Chair Michael Wefers.

This year, for the first time, the programme includes an impulse forum aimed equally at young academics and young managers in business, culture and administration. The event is entitled "Necessities and limits of economic growth - a critical discourse" and will take place on Thursday, 5 March 2015 at 6 p.m. in the university's lecture hall centre. Oldenburg environmental economist and growth critic Prof Dr Niko Paech and the Director of the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI), Dr Christian Growitsch, have been invited as speakers.

With this new annual event, the UGO wants to initiate a debate on important socio-political issues and create a platform for exchange and networking among young academics, said the initiator and deputy Chair of the UGO, Swea von Mende. This is not only in the interests of those addressed, but also in the interests of the region's development, as it can strengthen the willingness of people in science, business, culture and administration to communicate and cooperate. That, at least, is an important goal. At the same time, she hopes that this programme will attract more members to the university society from the next generation. --------
