Proven foresight

University Society honours long-standing members.

Mathematician Prof. Dr Wolfgang Sprockhoff and Sabine Kantin, representing the Oldenburg Bar Association, are among the ten members of the Universitätsgesellschaft Oldenburg e.V. (UGO) who were honoured today in the Brasserie Schmitz for their many years of loyalty to the UGO. Sprockhoff and the bar association have been members of the UGO, which was founded in 1972, for 40 years. UGO Chair Michael Wefers presented the honours in the presence of University President Prof. Dr Dr Hans Michael Piper.

Wefers emphasised in a short speech that the beginnings of the University, but also of the University Society, were not easy. All the more reason to applaud those who had not been deterred and had joined an organisation that had set itself the goal of promoting the university and building bridges to the population. With their early membership, they had shown foresight and even then recognised the great importance that the university would play for regional development.

In addition to Sprockhoff and the Bar Association, Prof. Dr Helmut Freiwald, Prof. Dr Enno Fooken and Dr Martin Gutsche were honoured for their 35-year membership, Prof. Dr Thomas Blanke, Otto Stammermann, Birgit Taubert, Helga Wilhelmer, Helmut Brümmer as well as Rhein-Umschlag GmbH & Co KG and the Vocational Training Centre of the Insurance Industry for 25-year membership.
