Michael Wefersno longer standing after many years on the Board Honorary Professor Dr Werner Brinker is the new Chair of the Universitätsgesellschaft Oldenburg e.V. (UGO). He was elected today at the suggestion of his predecessor Michael Wefers, who did not stand for re-election due to academic appointments. His deputy Swea von Mende, treasurer Dr Andreas Blomenkamp and secretary Oliver Thomsen were also re-elected unopposed. The previous Chair, Michael Wefers, had been a member of the Board since 2005 and took over as Chair in 2007. Under his leadership, the UGO was once again able to grow to over 1,000 members. The President of the University of Oldenburg, Prof. Dr Dr Hans Michael Piper, praised Wefers' commitment over the past few years as "energetic, innovative and deeply committed to the university". The university owes Michael Wefers a great debt of gratitude. He had represented the interests of the UGO and thus the University with empathy and sensitivity, explained Piper. With Werner Brinker, the General Assembly elected a personality who - like few others - is networked in the region and at the same time has deep insights into the University of Oldenburg. Brinker was a member of the University Council for more than ten years and, as Chairman of the Board of Management of EWE AG, was also its patron. He is also closely associated with science in other ways. Until recently, he was on the board of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft and was chairman of the Forum für Zukunftsenergien. He was also a member of the Scientific Commission of Lower Saxony for several years. Commenting on his election, he said he was delighted that the General Assembly had entrusted him with this challenging task. The university is a very important economic and scientific factor in the Weser-Ems region and beyond. He hoped that - building on the excellent work of his predecessor - he would be able to further increase awareness of the importance of the university and thus also the willingness in the region to support it at various levels, including materially.
