The cultural scientist PD Dr Anja Zimmermann has been included in the international excellence portal for female scientists "AcademiaNet". She was nominated by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
Zimmermann, who joined the Institute of Art and Visual Culture at the University of Oldenburg as a Heisenberg Fellow in 2009, studied art history, empirical cultural studies and education in Würzburg and Tübingen. From 1997 to 1999 she worked as a freelancer at the New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York). She completed her doctorate at the University of Tübingen with a thesis on art controversies in contemporary American art. From 1999 to 2005, she worked as a research assistant at the Department of Art History at the University of Hamburg, where she completed her habilitation in 2006. This was followed by deputy professorships and teaching positions at the universities of Bern, Vienna, Klagenfurt and Zurich. Zimmermann's research focus includes 19th and 20th century and contemporary art history, art and the natural sciences, gender studies and the history of science.
The excellence portal "AcademiaNet" was launched in 2010 by the Robert Bosch Stiftung in co-operation with the publishing company "Spektrum der Wissenschaft" and partners from business and science. It puts the spotlight on outstanding female scientists and thus strengthens the visibility and presence of women in science. The admission criteria include outstanding scientific qualifications. In addition to Zimmermann, chemist Prof Dr Katharina Al-Shamery, physicist Prof Dr Ulrike Feudel, environmental scientist Prof Dr Gudrun Massmann, neurobiologist Prof Dr Christiane Richter-Landsberg and historian Prof Dr Tanja Susanne Scheer are represented in "AcademiaNet" from the University of Oldenburg.
