Intensive care at home: current challenges for families and care services

(SEAS - H1 is a sub-project of the SEAS project founded and funded by the University of Oldenburg)

Life expectancy in Germany has steadily increased in recent decades. However, this development is also accompanied by an increase in (chronic) illnesses and more and more people needing care. The use of outpatient care services and the development of supportive care technologies have also increased the importance of intensive care at home. Invasively ventilated patients require a particularly high level of nursing and technical care, and the amount of patients has also increased in recent years. Depending on the diagnosis, the care of ventilated patients places very high demands on family members, professional care services and the use of care technologies (e.g. ventilation and communication technologies). The current state of research shows that only a few studies deal with the quality of life and social situation of respiratory patients and their families.

This study examines the care situation and social integration of ventilated patients:

  • How do families in intensive care at home organize everyday family life?
  • How do parents and their (adult) children organize family life?
  • How are family members socially embedded outside the home?
  • How is the interaction with care services and nursing staff organized?
  • Which technologies are used for support and where are further needs?
  • What are the current challenges and barriers for intensive care at home and their families?
