LEHR-LERN-LABORATORY at DA:O

Theology - Biblical Archaeology - Digital Classical Studies

Historically grounded. Archaeologically anchored. Digitally tangible. Close to the present.

A research-oriented teaching-learning format for upper secondary school students - at the interface of biblical religious history, archaeology of the South Levant and digital antiquity studies.

What it's all about: The teaching-learning lab involves hands-on research: with and on ancient everyday objects - figurines, cult vessels, ostraca, the Egyptian Book of the Dead - and with the help of digital methods. VR goggles and digital 3D reconstructions make ancient burial chambers and living environments from Israel and Egypt virtually accessible. Young people can experience how material research and AI-supported methods can visualise the past in a new way. The general profile remains constant - the topics change from issue to issue.

Current topic: Soul - January 2027

Background: The teaching-learning lab has been developed by Prof Dr Benedikt Hensel (Professorship of Old Testament and Biblical Archaeology, University of Oldenburg) since 2024 and has been carried out in several iterations together with Oldenburg secondary schools. It is part of the Digital Ancient Studies Oldenburg (DA:O).
