Lifelong learning at the University of Oldenburg - the history
The C3L - Centre for Lifelong Learning has existed in its current form for 20 years. However, its roots go back to the founding year of the University of Oldenburg: the contact centre for advanced scientific training started back in 1974 - adult education was part of the reform university's DNA from the very beginning.
Over the following five decades, the university opened up to non-traditional students in many ways. Educational programmes are developed where there is a social need: Help for AIDS sufferers and integration of repatriates, digitalisation and equal opportunities, ecology and care. The University of Oldenburg is also a nationwide pioneer in researching new learning formats - e-learning has been around since the 1990s.
When the C3L was founded in 2006, the Distance Learning Centre (ZEF) and the Centre for Distributed E-Learning (CeDeL) were integrated, followed by the Centre for Advanced Scientific Training (ZWW). These institutions bring together a wide range of projects and research approaches. They are united by the idea of giving as many people as possible access to scientifically sound education.
