The 50th anniversary of Hannah Arendt's death was the occasion for a well-attended panel discussion at Oldenburg's PFL cultural centre. The Hannah Arendt Centre at the University of Oldenburg, the Karl Jaspers Society, the C3L and the Oldenburg University Society hosted the event entitled "Challenges of Freedom".

In front of around 130 guests, Dr Franziska Augstein and Dr Manfred Geier discussed the political and ideological impulses in Hannah Arendt's thinking on 3 December. The historian and journalist Augstein, who was an editor at Die Zeit and Süddeutsche Zeitung, focussed in particular on the political challenges posed by Hannah Arendt's thinking. Geier, a philosopher and author who has published on Kant in particular, recalled in his contribution the impulses that Arendt received from the thinkers of the Enlightenment, especially with regard to the power of political judgement. Matthias Bormuth from the Karl Jaspers Society added a biographical perspective to the lively discussion.
A previously unpublished letter to Ludwig Greve, which Arendt had written shortly before her death, was read by Franziska Vondlrik at the end of the two-hour event. The actress and speaker also recited a poem by the poet Greve about the philosopher.
The event was part of the "Arendt Forum" series, which is organised several times a year by the Jaspers Society together with the C3L. Intellectuals from the fields of philosophy, science and art are invited to discuss the challenges of cosmopolitan freedom in various forms.
