Promoting financial literacy among employees

How can companies promote the financial education of their employees? This is the focus of a new joint project in which the C3L is involved.

How can companies promote the financial education of their employees? This is the focus of a new joint project in which the C3L is involved.

The project Financial Education by Companies for Employees (FinMa) is dedicated to the development and evaluation of an innovative financial education programme for employees. The aim is to develop a standards-compliant, scientifically based educational programme that is adapted to the needs of this target group.

A web portal with financial calculators, explanatory films and financial education seminars are being developed, which will be integrated into companies' corporate benefits programmes. Practical handouts and brochures for consumers will also be produced. The project is based on DIN standards and international recommendations and aims to increase employees' financial literacy in the long term.

At the C3L, the focus of the project is on scientific evaluation and accompanying research. The University of Oldenburg is responsible for the following work packages:

  • Financial literacy measurement tool
Development of a measurement tool that assesses the financial literacy of the target groups. As part of a preliminary study, the instrument will be empirically evaluated, revised and adapted to the target groups.
  • Evaluation and optimisation
Consolidation of the evaluation results from the financial education offers and accompanying measurements of financial literacy. The results are used to optimise the competency framework, the didactic formats and the content of the educational offer. The psychometric quality of the measurement tool is also evaluated.
  • Effectiveness and sustainability
Conducting effectiveness research on the educational offers, in particular to improve the financial literacy and long-term financial behaviour of the target groups.

The project partners in the joint project are DEFINO Institut für Finanznorm AG (project coordination), Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts and the University of Oldenburg. The project runs until February 2027 and is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food.
