Dr Christiane Brokmann-Nooren is retiring. The continuing education expert has headed the "Public Science" and "Education and Management" departments for many years. The 63-year-old has worked at the University of Oldenburg - where she also completed her doctorate in the subject of educational science - since 1986. Her areas of specialisation included guest and senior citizen studies and the KinderUniversität Oldenburg.
Brokmann-Nooren holds a Diplom degree in education specialising in adult and further education and completed her doctorate in 1992 on female education in the 18th century. Her first research project focussed on the continuing education needs of graduates of universities of applied sciences. She remained faithful to the topic of advanced scientific training, first at the Centre for Advanced Scientific Training (ZWW) and then from 2008 at the C3L. She was particularly committed to opening up the university - on the one hand to opening up paths into the university, for example with guest studies or the recognition of non-university competences, and on the other hand for offers outside the campus, such as the long-standing series of events "Uni am Markt" in co-operation with the Oldenburg State Theatre.
Brokmann-Nooren and her colleague from the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen recently received an award from the Dutch royal family for the German-Dutch seminar series "Grenzkontakte - was uns verbindet, was uns trennen" ("Border contacts - what unites us, what separates us"). The Consulate General awarded her the Order of Orange-Nassau in the class of "Knight" for decades of service to mutual understanding and German-Dutch friendship in the border region.
She was also involved internally in the university's committee work, for example on women's issues. For example, Brokmann-Nooren was a co-founder of the Centre against Sexual Discrimination and Violence and a long-standing member of the Women's Commission. She was also involved in the commissions for research and the promotion of young researchers as well as for good academic practice.
