"Oldenburg research in the shadow of IS - inclusion for people with disabilities in Iraq" - this is the topic with which the "Uni am Markt" will return from its summer break on Saturday, 24 September. Prof Dr Monika Ortmann from the Institute of Special Needs Education and Rehabilitation at the University of Oldenburg will give a short public lecture at 11.00 a.m. in the Exerzierhalle at Pferdemarkt (Johannisstraße 6). People in Iraq have been exposed to war and terror for decades. An above-average number of Iraqis are therefore chronically ill, traumatised or disabled. They are often hidden away and do not receive adequate healthcare or education. After Iraq ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2013 and thus committed itself to realising the social inclusion of all people, educational scientists from Oldenburg initiated a university partnership with the University of Dohuk in northern Iraq and founded the "Disability Studies and Rehabilitation" degree programme there. However, the establishment of the university programme is overshadowed by the intervention of the terrorists of the so-called Islamic State. In her lecture, Ortmann reports on how she and her team are nevertheless trying to promote cooperation with their Iraqi colleagues. The "Uni am Markt" is a co-operation project between the Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) at the University of Oldenburg and the Oldenburg State Theatre. Admission is free.
