Dr Jörn Thielmann from the Centre for Islam and Law in Europe (EZIRE) at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg will be speaking on the topic: "Why from the Middle East? Migration to Germany at the beginning of the 21st century".
People from the Middle East have been coming to Europe since the end of the 19th century in search of education, work or protection from political persecution. Their numbers increased particularly during the labour migration of the 1960s, when Turks, but also Moroccans and Tunisians, were specifically recruited. In recent years and decades, however, people from the Middle East have been fleeing oppression and civil wars, but also hopelessness. The lecture aims to trace the causes of flight as well as dreams of hope.
Anyone interested can follow the live broadcast on 29 June from 16:00 at the university's Lifelong Learning Campus,
