The ‘Blickwinkel’ lecture series ends on a high note!

The ‘Blickwinkel’ lecture series for the winter semester concluded with an event that was a treat for both the eyes and the ears. The finale took place last Thursday in the library hall, featuring Associate Professor Dr Kadja Grönke from the Institute of Music, who, together with the Berlin-based pianist Paul Mertens, gave a musical lecture on Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ‘Elective Affinities’. The focus was on Tchaikovsky’s collection of 18 piano pieces (18 morceaux pour piano, Op. 72), in which he drew on the music of his childhood, youth and early professional years, paying homage to the origins of Russian piano music and Russian musical education – without which he would not have become the composer we know today. For the audience of just under 60, the 90-minute lecture was a wonderful blend of theoretical content and superb piano music.

The ‘Blickwinkel’ lecture series will, of course, continue in the coming summer semester of 2023. You can look forward to a total of seven lectures, which will once again offer a colourful array of topics from across the university. These will include, for example, medicine – as we explore the surgery of tomorrow – psychology – as we examine the ageing of memory – medical ethics, research into bird migration, and even ecological theology.
