Holistic energy management in professional Data Centres

There are around 50,000 Data Centres in Germany. They consume around 2% of Germany's total electricity requirements - and the trend is rising. In addition, due to the short lifespan of ICT products, grey energy - i.e. the energy used to manufacture, transport, store and dispose of technical components - is also relevant to the overall energy consumption of a Data Centre.

TEMPRO is the first project in the context of considering the energy efficiency of Data Centres that also takes into account upstream and downstream stages of the value chain. The overarching goal of the project is to achieve a holistic increase in the energy and resource efficiency of Data Centres in Germany.

The project pursues two main objectives to this end:

  • Creation of an evaluation basis for the holistic energy and raw material efficiency of Data Centres.
  • Researching and developing new efficiency technologies in Data Centres that lead to significant energy savings.

TEMPRO creates the scientific basis to enable a holistic assessment of the energy efficiency of Data Centres. The results are made available to data centre operators as a software tool, among other things.

TEMPRO is a joint project led by the University of Oldenburg. Project partners are:

  • Cascade Use research group at the University of Oldenburg.
  • Department of Information Systems / Very Large Business Applications (VLBA), University of Oldenburg
