Boundary layer modelling

Modelling of the marine atmospheric boundary layer

The vertical structure of the marine atmospheric boundary layer (velocity, turbulence, wind direction) is still only incompletely known, which results in deficits in the engineering-scientific load and power determination for wind turbines. ForWind conducts fundamental investigations on the vertical structure of the marine atmospheric boundary layer with the following objectives:

  • Further development and verification of models of the vertical boundary layer structure over the sea. For this purpose, the available offshore measurement data with high spatial and temporal resolution are used.
  • Quantification of uncertainties in the wind profile determination under different meteorological conditions.
  • Analysis of the vertical wind shear to classify wind conditions with respect to different meteorological situations.
