biw210 Socialisation – Upbringing – Education

Module content:

The primary aim of this module is to examine and reflect upon key processes of socialisation, upbringing and education within institutional contexts, and the resulting opportunities and necessities for pedagogical practice. Educational processes within and outside school are examined in depth based on current findings in educational research and critically reflected upon with regard to pedagogical practice through case studies.

biw215 Teaching and Learning

Offered in: Winter and summer semesters
Scheduled for the second or third semester of the degree programme (prior to the general school placement)
Credit points : 6 // 1 lecture and 1 seminar

Module content:

The module explains didactic planning models and their educational theoretical foundations, followed by a description and analysis of teaching situations that promote and motivate learning, as well as learning strategies and their potential applications. Students will acquire fundamental knowledge of learning difficulties, learning prerequisites and the assessment of learning outcomes, as well as the development of criteria-based tasks and the assessment of objective, intra- and inter-individual reference standards.

biw220 Psychological Foundations

Offered in: Winter and summer semesters
Scheduled for the third or fourth academic semester
Scope: 6 credit points // 1 lecture and 1 seminar

The module presents the relevant psychological concepts relating to behaviour and mental processes, such as motivational and socio-emotional characteristics, information processing, and self- or other-generated social perception. In addition, students learn fundamental empirical psychological methods to enable them to critically analyse relevant empirical findings.

prx102 General School Placement

Offered: Seminars only in the summer semester
Registration periods for placement places at the Didactic Centre from November of the previous year
Scheduled for the fourth academic semester.
Scope: 1 lecture (four sessions) and 1 seminar (attendance is compulsory)

Module content:

Here, students are given the opportunity to assess their motivation for a career in the school environment, to try their hand at their first supervised teaching sequences and standard situations, to observe the school environment as participants, and to reflect on both this environment and their own role within it. In the preparatory and follow-up sessions organised by the Department of Educational Sciences, students are made aware of the unfamiliar role of a teacher in a school setting and are given the opportunity to critically reflect on the experiences gained in practice. Furthermore, students develop their initial didactic and methodological skills in lesson planning, delivery and reflection through practical application.

prx103 Practical Placement in the School Setting (BA in Special Education only)

Frequency: Seminars only in the winter semester
Registration periods for placement places at the Didactic Centre from June
Scheduled for the fifth academic semester.
Scope: 1 seminar (attendance is compulsory)

Module content:

Students gain initial insights into school and teaching experiences. The aims of the school placement are to familiarise students with the planning and organisation of lessons and support from the perspective of special educational needs, as well as to gain practical experience in educational practice.

biw225 Research Methods

Frequency: Lecture only in the winter semester; seminars in the winter and summer semesters
Scheduled for the fifth or sixth semester
Scope: 6 credit points // 1 lecture and 1 seminar

Module content:

Students will be equipped to understand empirical studies in school and classroom research, as well as to prepare and carry out their own research. This module features a significant practical research component, in which students work in groups to carry out their own small-scale quantitative or qualitative studies, analyse the data collected and interpret the results. Students can draw on the skills acquired here when writing their subsequent specialised final theses and, where applicable, when carrying out projects as part of the project phase of the Master of Education in Primary and Lower Secondary School programme.
