Study
The University of Mauritius was officially founded by the University of Mauritius Ordinance in December 1965. The existing School of Agriculture was expanded for this purpose. In 1971, the University of Mauritius Act defined more precisely the objects, competences, functions and structures of the University. On 24 March 1972, Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by her husband Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, officially opened the University of Mauritius. The UoM has several Schools and students can choose between subjects such as Computing Science, Economics, Mathematics or Physics. A total of almost 13,000 students are enrolled at the UoM, who are supervised by around 1,500 people (including professors, academic staff and administrative staff).
Everyday life
The UoM is located in Réduit in the district of Moka in the north of the island. Moka is an amalgamation of several individual villages and towns and is home to around 100,000 people. Very close to Moka is Port Louis, one of the most important harbour towns in Mauritius. Moka has experienced a major construction boom in recent years. This is partly due to the establishment of the "CyberCity" two kilometres away (Ebène City). Moka has a monsoon climate with the warmest month in February and the coolest in August. Temperatures vary between 28 °C in February and 15 °C in August. The dry season is in October and the rainy season in February.
The local currency is the Mauritius rupee (MUR). It is possible to withdraw cash from ATMs and pay with credit cards in many places. However, it is advisable to take EUR or USD in cash with you. Left-hand traffic prevails in Mauritius. The general condition of the road network is relatively good. Outside of urban centres, the roads are often narrow and confusing, and dogs and other animals are always likely to run loose. There are many cyclists and motorcyclists and quite a few are travelling in the dark without adequate lighting. There are a large number of mobile and fixed speed cameras. The cost of living is somewhat lower than in Central Europe. A flat is available for an average of 300-350 euros (depending on the location). You can find more information on the cost of living (for Moka) here.
