Study

The University of Ghana has been a partner university of Oldenburg since 2014. It is located on the west coast of Africa in Accra, the capital of Ghana, which is both the economic and administrative centre of the country. Accra was founded in the 15th century by the Ga, who wanted to trade with the Europeans there. However, the first fort built by the Portuguese was soon burnt down by the locals. An earthquake in 1862 destroyed large parts of Accra, including its European forts. In 1948, the so-called Accra Riots broke out after several peaceful demonstrators were shot dead. These riots were the "midwife" of Ghana's independence movement and made the later first president Kwame Nkrumah known throughout the country. After independence, Nkrumah declared Accra the "capital and growth centre of the national economy" of Ghana and promoted the city accordingly.

The University of Ghana was founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold COAST. It became independent when it was granted university status in 1961. Initially, research and teaching focussed on the humanities and social sciences, agriculture and medicine, but was expanded to include technology-oriented sciences as part of a national education reform. There are 3 campuses: around 21,000 students study at the main campus in Legon, 1,800 students at the Accra campus and around 840 students at the Korle-Bu campus. The University of Ghana specialises in health sciences, natural sciences, law and social sciences.

Everyday life

The cost of living is very low. You can get a full meal for just 2 euros. One option is to live in a room on campus, which costs around 5 euros a day. For a single room on the free housing market, you pay around 30 euros per month. A room in a shared flat with a shared bathroom and kitchen costs around 100 to 200 euros per month in Accra. Furnished flats and houses (furnished or unfurnished) are very expensive, especially in central locations. Here too, prices outside Accra are more moderate.

A stable political environment and sustained economic growth are also reflected in the shopping malls that have sprung up in recent years, offering all kinds of food and high-end consumer goods. Nevertheless, it is advisable to familiarise yourself a little with Ghanaian cuisine. In contrast to Nigeria, petrol shortages and fuel shortages are unknown in Ghana. The financial system is now relatively well developed and the use of major credit cards is unproblematic. Nevertheless, cash continues to play a central role in Ghana, as in the rest of Africa. In all major cities, the official exchange offices 'FOREX bureaux', easily recognisable on the streets, run the day-to-day business. The exchange rates there, which are reset daily, are generally more favourable than in the banks and the exchange procedure is uncomplicated and quick.

Formalities & interesting facts

Compared to the other countries in West Africa, most parts of Ghana are considered safe and have relatively few problems with crime, which also gives the country a positive image.

Sensible, normal vaccinations, e.g. against tetanus and hepatitis, are just as important for Europe as for all other countries in the world. It is also strongly recommended that you take out additional international or travel health insurance. It is also advisable to check any other insurance policies you may have (accident and liability insurance)Medical advice from the Federal Foreign Office

German nationals require a visa to enter Ghana, which the Ghanaian embassy in Berlin usually issues promptly and without any problems. When entering the country, it is important to present an international immunisation certificate and proof of a valid yellow fever vaccination. Before planning a visit and applying for a visa, it is advisable to check the websites of the Ghanaian government, the German Federal Foreign Office and the German Embassy in Accra for information on current entry and residence requirements, recent political developments and security-related issues.
