Study
Herzen State Pedagogical University (HSPU or just "Herzen") in St. Petersburg is one of the largest and oldest universities in Russia. Its history goes back to the Emperor's Foundling Hospital of 1797, which was founded on the university's current campus. Since 1991, it has borne its current name "Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia" (after Alexander Herzen, a Russian author and philosopher). The university is located right in the centre of St. Petersburg. The metropolis, which was built at the beginning of the 18th century by Peter the Great as a "window to Europe" at the eastern end of the Gulf of Finland, is today the second largest Russian city with a population of around 4.6 million, making it one of the northernmost cities in the world with over a million inhabitants. Culture and history characterise the impressive cityscape, which has since been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is known as the "Russian Detroit" due to its high density of international corporations and suppliers to the automotive industry.
Herzen plays a leading role in Russia in terms of its educational standards. 20 Schools and more than 100 departments make it possible to study almost every degree programme at a high level. As most courses are taught in Russian, a good knowledge of Russian is a prerequisite for a successful study visit. Russian courses are offered for international students all year round.
Credits are marked from 5-1, with 5 being the best grade and 1 being the worst (a grade of 2 means "failed"). International students receive their grades in the ECTS system. The language of instruction is mainly Russian, sometimes also English.
