Application
The academic year at Novgorod State University (NovSU) is divided into two terms: Term 1/winter semester (approx. September to December) and Term 2/summer semester (approx. February to June). Students from all Schools who have a knowledge of Russian (at least level B1) can apply to study at NovSU for one semester free of tuition fees.
Study
Novgorod State University was founded in 1993 by merging the two oldest universities in Novgorod - the Pedagogical and the Polytechnic. Later, the Novgorod Agricultural Academy was incorporated into the structure of the university.
Novgorod State University is a classical university and today has 14,000 students studying humanities, economics, agriculture and natural resources, engineering and technology, medicine and pharmacy, architecture and civil engineering.
Students from 54 countries around the world are currently studying at NovSU. The most popular among international students (558 people / 86%) are the specialisations of the Institute of Medical Education. In the past academic year, the implementation of degree programmes taught in English towards "Medicine" was started for the first time.
Everyday life
Veliky Novgorod, or simply Novgorod, is one of the oldest cities in Russia, first mentioned in the 9th century. The city is located on the Volkhov River, directly downstream of its outlet from Lake Ilmen and on the M10 federal road linking Moscow and St Petersburg. Novgorod was recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1992. The city has 218,717 inhabitants (2010 census); in the 14th century, the city was the capital of the Republic of Novgorod and one of the largest cities in Europe. In 1999, the suffix "Veliky" ("big") was added to the city's name. The city is known for the diversity and age of its medieval buildings. First and foremost is St Sophia's Cathedral, which was built between 1045 and 1050 under the patronage of Vladimir Yaroslavich.
Life on campus is an essential part of the university experience. Room prices are around 1,449 roubles/month. There is a canteen at NovSU. In the evenings, students can enjoy a variety of restaurants in the city centre.
NovSU offers exchange students transfers from the airport to the university, a wide range of sports facilities and an attractive cultural programme.
Formalities & interesting facts
The passport should be valid for at least 6 months after the planned departure from the Russian Federation. To enter Russia, foreign citizens require an entry visa for their national passport. The proposal should be submitted to the Russian embassy/consulate in your home country. National passports must be registered with the internal affairs authorities within 3 days of your arrival. Apply for this at the International Student Office. Make sure that all your documents are originals as photocopies will not be accepted. This application process can take some time - so make sure you apply in good time.
It is strongly recommended that you take out additional international or travel health insurance. It is also advisable to check any other insurance policies you may have (accident and liability insurance). The Examinations Office at the University of Oldenburg makes it easy for you to transfer credits relevant to your studies in Germany.
