The Cluster of Excellence "The Ocean Floor - Earth's Uncharted Interface" investigates the processes on the sea floor and their role in the Earth system - in particular the exchange of matter and energy between the ocean, solid Earth and biosphere. To better understand these complex relationships, we bring together researchers from different disciplines, from marine geosciences to biogeochemistry, (micro)biology and (palaeo)climatology. Together, we are working in an interdisciplinary and integrative manner to gain a more comprehensive picture of this hitherto little-explored habitat.

In 2026, 15 doctoral positions and up to 9 postdoctoral positions ("Ocean Floor Fellows") will be advertised. Further calls and updates will follow in the course of the funding phase.
