Write university history: We have the sources

Write university history - we have the sources!

An exhibition of the University Archive

The University Archives - memory and repository of sources

To mark the university's 50th anniversary, the University Archives Oldenburg organised a small special exhibition in the 'Collection Showcase' from January to March 2024 to provide insights into its fields of work and source holdings.

The University Archives Oldenburg have been in existence since 2011 and act as a living memory of the university. Following the development work of recent years, the exhibition aims to focus on existing sources and encourage visitors to engage with them. The magazine currently comprises more than 200 holdings with over 20,000 unique sources. This collection is constantly being expanded in order to document the university's development in all possible facets. This offers a wide range of exciting topics that can be researched for seminars as well as for qualification and research work. The University Archives team is eager to answer questions about university history and looks forward to working together to find suitable sources for projects, teaching and research!

Possible topics for which materials exist:

- the history of Oldenburg University of Education as the predecessor of the university

- the founding committee of the university, which met from 1971 to 1974

- international partnerships of the university

- the history of the organised student body in AStA and student bodies

- the abundance of student leaflets and magazines

- the sports and teams active in university sports

- the development of the campus radio station, which still exists today

- the colourful cultural life on campus with university theatre, university cinema and music groups

Today's news - tomorrow part of history?!

The University Archive needs support to keep the University's historical heritage alive! We are looking for documents and memorabilia from people, associations and groups with a connection to the university: for example flyers, posters, printed material, photos or other objects from events around the campus. We are also looking for digital records and documents! There was a letterbox next to the exhibition where you could hand in material for the university archive until the end of March. Do you have materials that you would like to hand in to the university archive? You can find information on how to do this here!

Curators: Gunnar Zimmermann and Kirsten Sturm
