Computer simulations are omnipresent and are used in numerous areas of human life. But to what extent can we trust their results?
In this lecture, we will use simple examples to show how seemingly harmless calculations can lead to completely wrong results and how maths can be used to save the day.

A mathematical competition in teamwork for groups of 2-4 pupils. The best teams are honoured with certificates and prizes. The competition consists of tasks that challenge different mathematical skills, especially logical thinking and reasoning. The groups can pursue different solution strategies, e.g. solve the tasks together or divide them up among themselves. Calculators are allowed.

Why don't you try solving the following problem (from a previous competition): Gretel gets lost in the forest. However, she knows that she is no more than 2 kilometres from the edge of the forest (the edge of the forest is straight). Suggest a path that will lead Gretel safely out of the forest and that is at most (a) 15 km, (b) 14 km long. You can assume that Gretel can always follow your path (even with any curved sections).

We have invited some mathematicians to be interviewed for you. We want to hear from them why they studied maths, how they experienced studying with us and what they think of it in retrospect. In addition to their study experiences, we also want to ask them about their current academic appointments and present various fields of work - e.g. teacher, actuary, software developer, modeller in non-mathematical research.
