Information Day for Prospective Students

Oldenburg. From the coming winter semester, the University of Oldenburg, in collaboration with the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, will be offering the first cross-border degree programme in medicine, which serves as a model for the rest of Europe. Prospective students can find out more on Saturday 21 April, from 10.30 am to 4.00 pm, at the University of Oldenburg (Haarentor campus, Lecture Theatre Centre). The European Medical School Oldenburg-Groningen (EMS) is launching the pilot programme at the University of Oldenburg with 40 students.

The information day will present the structure and distinctive features of the new degree programme – through introductory courses, demonstrations and taster seminars. These are designed to illustrate to participants how both patients and students are actively involved in the training and how problem-based learning works.

Oldenburg’s partner hospitals, general practice surgeries and the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) will be providing information in the foyer of the Lecture Theatre Centre about their contributions to the model degree programme. Information stands run by the Student Advisory Service, the School of Medicine (in the making) and other internal and external organisations round off the programme.

The EMS’s model degree programme in medicine differs significantly from traditional medical degree programmes: a patient-centred approach and interdisciplinary work shape the training from the very beginning. Instead of cramming for the ‘Physikum’, future doctors prepare for their profession through problem-based learning with tutors, a consistent focus on research and intensive communication training. In the process, they gain an understanding of the healthcare system in the neighbouring country: during their six-year degree programme, they spend one academic year at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. The programme concludes in Oldenburg with the German State Examination, which qualifies graduates to practise medicine without restriction.
