Newspaper readers decide on their favourite

Oldenburg hearing researcher Birger Kollmeier has been nominated for the Nordwest-Zeitung's "Man of the Year 2012" alongside lifesaver Joachim Schoone from Scharrel, lightning survivor Piotr Kostrzewski from Löningen and stratospheric skydiver Felix Baumgartner from Austria.

"Man of the Year" is one of a total of eight categories, in each of which four "candidates" are up for election. Readers of the Nordwest-Zeitung have until 10 December to vote for their favourites for the people, events, films and quotes of 2012.
