University President Prof Dr Babette Simon and Vice President Prof Dr Gunilla Budde awarded 104 Deutschlandstipendien to students at a ceremony. The funding not only benefits the recipients, but also strengthens the north-west region.
"When the Deutschlandstipendium was introduced nationwide two years ago, we were able to award 42 scholarships at our university. Today, there are 104 students who we will be able to support in the future thanks to the great support from the north-west. This impressive development is an expression of the strong bond between the region and the university. Our thanks go to all supporters, such as entrepreneurs, service providers and private donors," explained University President Prof Dr Babette Simon, who presented the scholarships at a ceremony together with Prof Dr Gunilla Budde, Vice President for Studies and Teaching. In addition to the honoured students and their families, numerous sponsors also attended the ceremony.
The Deutschlandstipendium is worth 300 euros per month and lasts for one year. Half of the sum comes from the federal government if the university succeeds in raising the other half from private donors. The Deutschlandstipendium not only benefits talented young people; it also strengthens the region, emphasised Simon. A large proportion of the well over 2,000 first-year students each year come from the north-west and often remain connected to their home region after completing their degree.
A total of 334 students applied for a Deutschlandstipendium scholarship at the University of Oldenburg. When selecting the scholarship holders, it was not only outstanding credits that counted - as stipulated by the federal government. "It is particularly important to us to support those students who take on responsibility in the family alongside their studies - be it by bringing up children or caring for a relative," said Budde. "The Deutschland-Stipendium enables all students, but especially these students, to concentrate more on their studies."
The selected students come from all subject areas. Economics, chemistry and mathematics are most frequently represented.
