Career prospects at the university

A self-built pinball machine, engine models, a reciprocating saw: there is plenty to marvel at and touch at the university's stand at the Job4u youth fair. Some of these objects are used by the trainees in the university's workshops and laboratories in their everyday work, while others were created as part of their final projects. Take the pinball machine, for example: two apprentices from the System Electronics department developed the machine in collaboration with the City of Oldenburg's Education Centre for Technology and Design - as an illustration of how much technology can be contained in a piece of gaming equipment. The exhibit already attracted a lot of interest at the Ideenexpo in Hanover, an event for young people that takes place every two years.

Most people realise that not only scientists work at a university, but also employees in administration and for the technical infrastructure. However, the fact that many academic appointments can also be learnt at universities seems to surprise some. In the workshops, laboratories, library and central administration offices, the University of Oldenburg offers training in ten academic appointments, including chemical laboratory technicians, media designers, gardeners and animal keepers. As one of the largest employers in the region, it is taking responsibility for young people starting their careers and at the same time training the employees of tomorrow. Committed trainers introduce the trainees to the academic appointments in a varied and practical way - with many insights into the world of science. Vocational schools teach the theoretical basics.

This year marks the seventh time that the university has taken part in the "Job4u" fair: it has had its own stand for the past four years. The career guidance fair takes place every autumn. Pupils can find out about job profiles, training companies and universities from companies in the region. In addition to direct contact with companies, they can also talk to trainees from the various academic appointments at the fair. Parents can also find out about the opportunities and prospects for their children.
