Around 3,500 runners took to the starting line at the 16th Brunnenlauf in Eversten on Sunday. Among them: 71 university employees, who came out on top in more ways than one.
Under the team name "UNIted", professors, academic staff and colleagues from technology and administration battled their way through the heat together - successfully, as no other team could boast so many active runners - for which they were awarded first place. The trophy was presented by Minister President Stephan Weil.
The university athletes achieved further successes: Thomas Pollmann from the Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences (IBU) was the third fastest of all participants. Prof Dr Hans-Peter Schmidtke from the Institute of Educational Sciences took first place in his age group. In the team ranking, the runners from "UNIted" received the trophy for second place. As it turned out later, this was apparently wrong: the organisers had made a mistake and the university team was actually the third fastest.
The University of Oldenburg has been taking part in the Brunnenlauf with its own team since 2012. Back then, seven runners took part. Last year, there were already 41 participants. Sabrina Biondi (School I) and Klaus Wettwer (Division 3) are responsible for the organisation.
