The Federal Cabinet has appointed Böhringer to the Commission for four years at the suggestion of Federal Research Minister Prof Dr Annette Schawan. He succeeds Prof Dr Joachim Luther, who researched and taught at the University of Oldenburg until 1993.
The EFI advises the Federal Government on research and innovation policy issues and highlights progress and opportunities for action on an annual basis.

For several years he was head of the research department "Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management" at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim.
