The University of Oldenburg will be represented at this year's Hannover Messe, which takes place from 13 to 17 April, with several exhibits and further education offers in the field of wind energy.
ForWind, the centre for wind energy research at the Universities of Oldenburg, Hanover and Bremen, will be presenting the "Active Grid" in Hall 27 (Stand E50). It enables turbulent dynamic flows to be produced under controlled conditions in the laboratory. With its diamond-shaped aluminium blades, the centrepiece of the large wind tunnel currently under construction in Oldenburg can realistically simulate all conceivable wind situations, from mild breezes to highly turbulent storms. This opens up new possibilities for the operation and further development of wind turbines.
ForWind will also be presenting a newly developed wind scanner. This is based on the remote sensing method LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), which measures air currents with high temporal and spatial resolution. The new compact design of the measuring device allows it to be mounted directly on the wind turbine. In this way, it actively supports the control of the turbines and helps to reduce the impact of gusts of wind.
Another exhibit from the field of flow measurement is the spherical anemometer, whose technology has been continuously improved and refined by ForWind scientists in recent years. It can be used to measure wind speed and direction simultaneously and at high frequency. Thanks to its particularly stable shape and the absence of moving parts, the device is ideal for offshore use.
Interested parties can also find out about further training opportunities at ForWind at the Hannover Messe: Two further education study programmes on onshore and offshore wind energy are aimed at subjects and managers in the industry. In its seminars, the ForWind Academy combines practical issues with the latest scientific findings.
