"Fireball on ice - emergency medicine at -50 degrees Celsius" - this is the title of the inaugural lecture by anaesthetist Prof. Dr Christian Byhahn. The 44-year-old is Head Physician at the Clinic for Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy at the Evangelical Hospital in Oldenburg and Adjunct Professor at School V - School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
In the public lecture on Wednesday, 15 April at 6 p.m. in the Schlaues Haus (Schlossplatz 16), the doctor will talk about his experiences as an expedition doctor in the Arctic and Antarctic and the special medical challenges in the polar regions in a scientific but also humorous way.
"In Professor Byhahn, we have appointed a highly qualified, motivated and scientifically very active anaesthetist to our School. Professor Byhahn's integration into the development project will bring the Protestant Hospital even closer academically to the School and the University," says Dean Prof Dr Gregor Theilmeier, assessing Byhahn's role for the School.
Prof Dr Christian Byhahn (44), Chief Physician at the Evangelical Hospital Oldenburg since 2013, was appointed Associate Professor at the University of Oldenburg last year. Byhahn studied medicine in Frankfurt am Main. From 1999 to 2013, he worked at the Clinic for Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy at the University Hospital Frankfurt am Main, most recently as managing and senior consultant since 2009.
In 1999, he completed his doctorate in Frankfurt with a thesis on the exposure of operating theatre staff to anaesthetic gases. His habilitation followed in 2005 with a thesis on intensive care medicine. Byhahn completed vocational training as a paramedic, further education in emergency medicine and intensive care medicine as well as a part-time degree in "Business Administration for Doctors", which he completed with certification as a health economist.
In 2012, the physician received the "Michael Strumpf Rhetoric Prize". In 2008, the Department of Human Medicine at the University of Frankfurt awarded him the prize for excellent teaching. This year, he lectured as a guest lecturer at the universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch in South Africa.
Byhahn is the author of numerous specialist articles and textbooks and has been organising expedition cruises and extreme sports events in polar regions for many years. His research focus includes airway management, care research in emergency medicine and obstetric anaesthesia.
