It has a diameter of seven metres, is printed with original NASA images and will be floating in the St. Lamberti Church (Markt 17) until 20 August, seemingly shining weightlessly: the Mars model by British artist Luke Jerram.
On the initiative of the University of Oldenburg and The Smart House Oldenburg and in co-operation with St. Lambert's Church, the "Mars findet Stadt" project of the "science2public - Gesellschaft für Wissenschaftskommunikation" association (Halle), which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, is also making a stop in Oldenburg. The tour is taking place as part of the Year of Science, which will focus on "Our Universe" with various projects in 2023.
The university and the Schlaue Haus are accompanying the impressive installation with a suitable programme. During the campaign period, experts will be talking about Mars from very different perspectives. For example, Oldenburg historian Prof Dr Michael Sommer will give a lecture on "Mars in Myth and History", while Prof Dr Björn Poppe from the University Observatory will explore the planet Mars with interested parties directly on the giant model. The programme also includes a reading, night watchman tours, church services focusing on the unusual exhibit in the church building and many other activities. An overview of all events can be found online at: www.schlaues-haus.de/mars-findet-stadt
A photo competition is being held alongside the exhibition. Anyone who sends their picture with the Mars model to the Instagram channel @marsfindetstadt by 20 August has the chance to visit the ship simulator at Jade Jochschule in Elsfleth on 3 November. Participants should add a short explanation of why they would like to live on Mars - or why not.
The travelling exhibition about the Red Planet opened in Halle an der Saale in May and is now travelling through a total of nine cities. The artist Luke Jerram, born in 1974, creates sculptures, large installations and live art projects. He has not only created replicas of Mars, but also of the Earth and the Moon. These have also toured Europe in recent years
