Young researchers should no longer have to shuffle from short-term contract to short-term contract - this is one of the aims of the new Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act. But what does the amendment mean in practice for early career researchers and those who want to hire them? Astrid Janssen, Head of Human Resources at the University, attributes the amendment with "considerable influence on the contract set-up for young academics". She will give a lecture on the topic on Wednesday, 14 December at 6 p.m. in the university library hall (Uhlhornsweg 49-55). The subsequent discussion will be moderated by the Vice President for Early Career Researchers and International Affairs, Prof. Dr Esther Ruigendijk. The Graduate Academy and the Graduate Schools for Humanities and Social Sciences (3GO) and for Natural Sciences, Medicine and Technology (OLTECH) will then host a reception for further dialogue. According to Janssen, the legislator has certainly achieved its goal of providing better protection for junior staff with appropriate terms. However, the law, which has been in force since March, also brings with it "disadvantages and uncertainties that need to be overcome". For example, it makes short contract terms impossible, where they would have had an important function from the perspective of both the hirer and the employee. In her presentation, Janssen discusses the main legal changes, advantages and disadvantages. The Head of Human Resources reports on how the practical implementation at the university has developed after one semester - and what developments can be expected in the future. The 3GO's Doctoral Candidates' Day kicks off in the morning with a discussion on prospects for early career researchers. At 10.00 a.m., she invites you to the first part of a three-part workshop with coach and trainer Katharina Ludewig: "Doctorate in the humanities and social sciences - what next?" Registration is required for this event. Doctoral candidates or those interested in a doctorate can exchange ideas in the afternoon at a poster session in the library hall. "Posters & Coffee" will be held from 3.00 to 5.30 pm. The session offers an insight into various dissertation projects and the opportunity to network with other doctoral students.
