Oldenburg Declaration on the Promotion of Advanced Scientific Training for OlderPeople
In March this year, the annual conference of the "Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft wissenschaftliche Weiterbildung für Ältere" (BAG WiWA) took place at the University of Oldenburg. The 60 participants discussed and developed guidelines for advanced scientific training for older people, which are now available as the "Oldenburg Declaration on the Promotion of Advanced Scientific Training for Older People". "The BAG WiWA has set out five demands in its declaration paper and calls on all social groups to provide appropriate support," explains Dr Christiane Brokmann-Nooren, Head of "Public Science" at the Center for Lifelong Learning (C3L) and organiser of the annual conference.
At the centre of the demands are the importance, necessity and positive impact of learning in old age and the expansion of educational opportunities for older people as well as concepts of intergenerational learning. The institutions of advanced scientific training at universities play a decisive role here, as this is where the participation of older people in science is ensured, expanded and accompanied by research.
