Oldenburg Declaration on the Promotion of Advanced Scientific Training for Older People
In March this year, the annual conference of the “Federal Working Group on Advanced Scientific Training for Older People” (BAG WiWA) took place at the University of Oldenburg. The 60 participants discussed and drew up guidelines on further education for older adults, which are now available as the “Oldenburg Declaration on the Promotion of Advanced Scientific Training for Older Adults”. “The BAG WiWA has set out five demands in its declaration and calls on all sections of society to provide appropriate support,” explains Dr Christiane Brokmann-Nooren, Head of the “Public Science” division at the Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) and organiser of the annual conference.
At the heart of these demands lie the importance, necessity and positive impact of learning in later life, the expansion of educational opportunities for older people, and concepts of intergenerational learning. Institutions for advanced scientific training at universities play a crucial role in this regard, as they ensure and expand older people’s participation in academia, whilst supporting this through research.
