Prof Dr Wolfgang Nebel, Professor of Computing Science at the University of Oldenburg and Chairman of the Board of the affiliated Institute OFFIS, is a new member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech).
The academy is made up of around 400 outstanding scientists across Germany, primarily from the engineering and natural sciences, but also from the humanities and social sciences. Nebel is the third scientist from the University of Oldenburg to join the prestigious organisation after his colleagues Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. H.-Jürgen Appelrath and Prof. Dr. Werner Damm.
In 1993, Nebel, who had previously worked in industry, accepted the call to the University of Oldenburg. The department he heads, "Embedded Hardware/Software Systems", with more than 20 scientists in research and teaching, forms the "Computing Science" bridge between software and hardware, so to speak. Nebel is particularly interested in new design methods for reducing energy consumption and increasing robustness in information and communication systems.
In addition to his many years on the OFFIS board, Nebel is also a fellow of the world's largest professional engineering organisation, the IEEE. He serves as Deputy Chair of the edacentrum, which promotes microelectronic research and development, as Chair of the European Electronic Design Association and, since the beginning of the year, as Scientific Vice President of the German Industrial Research Association Konrad Zuse e.V. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German government's "Industry 4.0" platform.
The German Academy of Science and Engineering is under the patronage of the Federal President and aims to develop excellent and far-sighted recommendations and studies for politics and society. It supports the knowledge transfer between science and industry and promotes the next generation of technology scientists.
