"If you start studying physics in Oldenburg now, we can virtually guarantee you employment after graduation," says Prof Dr Dr Birger Kollmeier from the Institute of Physics at the University of Oldenburg, explaining the excellent career prospects in this subject. "Only about half as many physicists are currently being trained as the labour market needs". For this reason, the members of the Institute of Physics were busy advertising at the University Information Day on Friday 20 June: "Physics in Oldenburg - study in the city of the day after tomorrow" is the motto of the campaign. A web portal created especially for prospective students presents interesting facts about studying physics, including video clips of everyday life as a physics student and interviews with students and lecturers at the Institute.
"The aim of the new web portal is to arouse interest in the quite unconventional research focus of our Institute, which is geared towards applications and mega-topics such as the environment, energy and medicine," emphasises Kollmeier. "With this focus, we are not only contributing to Oldenburg's profile as the City of Science 2009 and the City of Tomorrow, but also opening up excellent career prospects for our graduates."
