Summer school 2009

Summer school: "Modern Computational Science": 16-28 August 2009

Due to ever faster computers and better computer algorithms, computer simulations are becoming increasingly important in research. In physics, for example, more than a fifth of all published research papers are now produced on computers.

The CvO University of Oldenburg is now strengthening this promising field by organising
an international summer school entitled "Modern Computational Science", which will take place from 16-28 August 2009. The topics range from the basics of programming, data analysis and algorithms to the latest computer-orientated research applications in biology, chemistry, computing science, mathematics and physics. The lectures will be held in English
by international specialists and by Oldenburg researchers from School II and V. The lectures will be accompanied by a conference volume published by Oldenburg University Press. A supporting programme with excursions to Bremen, Jever and Norderney is also planned. The summer school is organised by Prof. Alexander Hartmann (Institute of Physics) and
Dr. Reinhard Leidl (School V).

The school is open to students from the third year onwards, including doctoral candidates in natural science, Computing Science and Mathematics subjects. Participants can come from Germany and abroad, especially from Oldenburg. Interested parties from industry are also very welcome.

In addition to the university's own funds, financial support has also been obtained from the EWE Foundation, ForWind and the Volkswagen Foundation. As a result, a number of scholarships
can be awarded, which allow participation at low cost (100 euros for a fortnight including accommodation etc.). Further information on registration, content and the supporting programme can be found at www.mcs.uni-oldenburg.de.
