"Doubts dispelled" - school leavers find out about studying physics
45 freshly graduated school leavers from Oldenburg, East Frisia, Emsland, Bremen and the Oldenburg Münsterland region came to the University of Oldenburg yesterday to find out about studying physics. Professors, doctoral candidates and students from the institute gave the school leavers first-hand information and reported on research at the university. "Physicists have the best opportunities on the labour market after successfully completing their degree," promised Prof. Dr Dr Birger Kollmeier, Head of the Department of Medical Physics and initiator of the workshop. The demand for well-trained physicists is far greater than the number of graduates. The A-level students were given an insight into research during guided tours of the university's laboratories. The participants cooled down in the wind tunnel at ForWind, the centre for wind energy research, and learned about the challenges of turbulence research. At the EWE research centre NEXT ENERGY, they were introduced to the production of thin-film photovoltaic modules and learned about the performance of human hearing in the Hörgarten at The Haus des Hörens. In direct, informal discussions with professors, students and members of the physics student body, the A-level students were given information about the requirements of a physics degree programme. Prof Dr Dr Birger Kollmeier and his colleagues were enthusiastic after the workshop: "A successful event with a good atmosphere and young people who already have a lot of knowledge and a great interest in physics."
