Prof. Dr ir. Simon Doclo will give his inaugural lecture at the Institute of Physics at the University of Oldenburg on 12 April 2010 as part of the Physics Colloquium. The lecture is entitled "Signal processing for acoustical applications". The "Signal processing" working group headed by Simon Doclo is primarily concerned with two issues: the separation of acoustic signals and the localisation of speech.
This involves researching the basis for algorithms, i.e. developing a form of processing different acoustic signals, recorded with a microphone grid, which are fed into a technical device. These signals are filtered in different ways in order to achieve the best possible speech intelligibility, good speech quality or even well-functioning speech recognition. The basic principles developed are tested and further developed in the respective application. Applications include (binaural) hearing aids, mobile phones, but also the transmission of conference communication situations and the design of an age-appropriate living environment. In all of these situations, the aim is to improve speech intelligibility, locate the respective speakers and suppress background noise as well as large reverberations in rooms. The "Signal Processing" working group aims to tackle these complex issues of acoustic situations and find solutions.
