Long Night 2010

Second Long Night of Science for Northern Lights

Bild The "Long Night of Science" on 24 September 2010 was once again a great success, attracting several thousand visitors to the Wechloy campus despite the mixed weather. It is the university's largest public event, which took place for the second time after the successful launch in 2009.
The patron was Lower Saxony's Minister of Science, Prof Dr Johanna Wanka. From 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., all of the University's Schools and numerous other institutions presented themselves to the public with a varied scientific programme. More than 100 lectures, laboratory tours and hands-on experiments, accompanied by exhibitions and film screenings, offered visitors of all ages exciting insights into the world of science and research. University President Prof Dr Babette Simon said that she was particularly pleased that so many scientists took part in the Long Night. This was also an expression of the solidarity with the city and region of Oldenburg. At the same time, the public presentation of science and research also fulfils a piece of social responsibility.
One of the highlights of the Long Night was the Science Slam, which was organised for the first time. More than one hundred spectators were present when five young scientists competed with short presentations. The audience, which acted as a jury, crowned Bernhard Ecker (Institute of Physics) "Slam Champion" with his short presentation "Solar power from plastic". The Long Night was supported by the EWE Foundation, OLB AG, VWG, CeWe Color AG, Universitätsgesellschaft Oldenburg (UGO) and famila Einkaufsland Wechloy. Media partners were the Nordwestzeitung and the weekly newspaper "DIE ZEIT".
