International Summer School: Applied solar technology in developing countries

"Applied Solar Technology in Developing Countries" is the theme of the International DAAD Alumni Summer School, which opens on 30 May at the University of Oldenburg and runs until 12 June. The organisers are the Postgraduate Programme Renewable Energy (PPRE) at the University of Oldenburg, the Centre for Development Research (ZEF) at the University of Bonn and the Energy and Environmental Management in Developing Countries programme at the University of Flensburg. The Summer School is financially supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The 25 participants are alumni who have studied in Germany and are currently working in the field of solar energy. They come from developing and newly industrialised countries, including Brazil, China, Bolivia, Peru, Indonesia, Uganda, Nigeria and Vietnam.

The Summer School aims to promote exchange between alumni and facilitate international scientific cooperation. Topics such as "Photovoltaics for rural electrification", "Sustainable energy supply and development", "Mechanisms for environmentally sustainable development", "Project management and monitoring of small photovoltaic systems" and "Gender and energy" are at the centre of the programme. During the Summer School, participants will also visit various companies specialising in the manufacture of photovoltaic systems. The Summer School will conclude with a visit to the world's leading solar trade fair "Intersolar Europe 2010" from 9 to 11 June in Munich. Participants will have the opportunity to present their activities and make contact with companies at a DAAD exhibition stand.
