Prof. Dr Martin Kühn took over the newly created endowed professorship of "Wind Energy Systems" on 1 April. Kühn is one of the most renowned researchers in wind energy and has many years of experience in the international wind energy sector. Most recently, he held an endowed chair at the University of Stuttgart. His teaching and research activities in Oldenburg were made possible by support from the state of Lower Saxony and EWE AG. In Oldenburg, Martin Kühn has a wide range of tasks awaiting him: he is to bring together the many threads of Oldenburg's extensive wind energy network, expand the range of teaching and training opportunities and drive forward the infrastructural expansion of wind energy. Important questions are: How do wind turbines behave dynamically in the complex flow conditions of wind farms? How can large offshore wind farms with their hundreds of individual units be designed so that they can be reliably operated like a single conventional power plant? To answer these and other questions, says Kühn, laboratory tests and simulations on mainframe computers as well as innovative measurement and monitoring methods on modern wind turbines are planned in the network.
